The following database is a snapshot of current physical activity.  The initiatives have been grouped into settings for parents, schools, adults, communities and workplaces.  The snapshot gives an outline of the type of project but for further details the contact details have also been listed.

PARENTS

Family Food Patch Project

A Wellbeing Plan for Aussie Kids

 A Wellbeing Plan for Aussie Kids has been developed by CSIRO to provide parents with information on healthy foods and habits. A printed fridge magnet of this plan was distributed to every primary school child in Australia in September 2007.The aim of this Plan is to make eating well and being active a higher priority for all families.

SCHOOLS

1Seven – Move More, Eat Well 

Encourages children (5-12yrs) to participate in one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity and eat seven serves of fruit and vegetables per day. The program provides web-based material, curriculum resources, games and giveaways and provides school visits from ambassadors and athletes from netball, AFL and cricket.   For more information visit www.1seven.com.au  

Move Well Eat Well
 
The Move Well Eat Well Award is available to Tasmanian primary schools in 2009. Similar to SunSmart, schools will be supported to meet key criteria which reinforce healthy eating and promote physical activity.

Every primary school can become a part of this exciting initiative to support children’s wellbeing by joining the Award Program. Support materials have been developed in collaboration with a range of Tasmanian health professionals, parents, teachers, local government and community based organisations. 

The Move Well Eat Well Award offers:

  • recognition of schools’ achievements
  • a whole school approach to promoting healthy eating and physical activity
  • a simple framework for planning and action
  • tailored Tasmanian resources for teachers, parents and health professionals
  • clear links to the Tasmanian Health and Wellbeing curriculum

Walking Bus

Schools can work with volunteers to provide physical activity through children walking to schools as a group with volunteer adults.   For more information visit www.travelsmart.gov.au/schools/index.html   

Active After-schools Communities  

The Active After-school Communities (AASC) program is a national program that provides Australian primary school-aged children with access to free, structured physical activity programs in the after- school timelsot.

Bike Education Program

A bike safety education kit will be available free-of-charge to every primary school across the country to teach young riders necessary skills and detection of dangers through engaging classroom and practical activities. In addition to targeting rider safety, the kit also covers environmental issues and encourages physical activity.

Jump Rope for Heart

The Heart Foundation's Jump Rope for Heart program is now celebrating its 24th year of success in Australia. Since 1983, over 50,000 Jump Off days have been conducted, with almost 8 million participants from more than 90 per cent of all Australian Schools being involved. Enough skipping rope has been used to stretch all the way from Sydney to Perth

ADULTS

Get Active Program

The Get Active Program is a 10-week series of workshops that cover topics to assist women and girls to address their own barriers to physical activity.  Each session commences with a group discussion, where information is provided on issues such as motivation, personal safety, stress management, goal setting and body comfort.  This is followed by some form of physical activity selected by the group and led by people with specific training in that area.  For more information call Rosy Green on (03) 6336 2073 or email womensporttas@yahoo.com

Lifescripts – Advice for Healthy Living

Heart Moves

Ride to Work Day

COMMUNITY

10,000 Steps

10,000 Steps is a free program that encourages you to use a step-counting pedometer to track your daily physical activity levels. This is free and easy to do!  Can be done as an individual, workplace or as a community group.

A team-based step challenge conducted within Tasmania over a one-month period to improve awareness of workplace physical activity.

Get Walking Tasmania has undergone some exciting changes and will be held for the month of October in 2009.  Get Walking Tasmania is an initiative of the Premier's Physical Activity Council and is coordinated by the Heart Foundation.
