Why Walk?

 

 

Benefits of regular exercise

 

·        Improved quality of life

·        Exploration of new and interesting places

·        Ability to carry out daily activities with more energy,  strength and stamina

·        Improved blood circulation and enhanced heart and  lung function

·        Increased muscle and bone strength, giving better  protection for joints

·        Intensified energy and exercise endurance

·        Reduced blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels

·        Aids in control of diabetes – Type 2 and arthritis complaints

·        Enhanced sense of wellbeing

·        Increased flexibility and reduced joint stiffness

·        Improved balance and coordination

·        Promotes weight loss in conjunction with a sensible diet

·        Helps maintain independence

·        Increased oxygen supply to the brain, helping to improve memory and alertness

 What is required prior to and during the walk 

·        Commitment to sustain the activity

·        Knowledge of gentle stretches and appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises

·        The ability to pace oneself on the walk

·        Loose comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather conditions

·        Sunglasses, a hat and if necessary wet weather protection

·        Comfortable, supportive walking shoes

·        Apply sunscreen before starting the walk

·        It is preferable to eat a light meal at least one hour before exercising

·        Take a drinking water

·        Knowledge of precautions – prior discussion with a doctor will provide this information

 

PLEASE NOTE:  Be aware of sudden changes while walking, e.g. if you become overheated or unduly breathless or experience any pain or pressure in your chest or an irregular heartbeat, or if you become dizzy or nauseous, PLEASE TELL SOMEONE
