Walking Resources - Risk Management

Points to be considered by walking groups

In relation to risk management it is the responsibility of each organising group to employ strategies to reduce the risk associated with the walks.  Has the route need designed and checked to limit risk?  Look at the paths/walkways and road crossings.

Is the walk supervised appropriately?  Are the group leaders clearly identified?  Supervision before, during and after the walk, the necessary type of supervision, (e.g. volunteer, first-aid, walk leaders) and walk guides/leaders with suitable experience (e.g. able to lead warm-up/down) are issues to be identified and addressed.

Have safety announcements and/or notices been provided to all participants?  Health issues (e.g. possible health risks and warning signs), the need to obey road rules, information about appropriate clothing etc need to be dealt with.

Do the specifics of the risk reduce possible negative impact on walkers?  Timing, variety of lengths and intensity of walk if appropriate.  Is water provided for participants?

Is there a mechanism in place if an incident does occur?  Do walk leaders have a way of contacting help (e.g. mobile phone).
