Make healthy eating a part of your healthy lifestyle

Food and You

Eating well provides the body with the right nutrients for growth and repair, and can help during times of stress and illness.  There are many factors that influence the way we eat.  Taking control of what you eat and making positive choices are ways in which you can be responsible for you own health and wellbeing.

What we eat can have an immediate effet on our energy levels, our moods, skin, hair, teeth and how well we concentrate.  In the longer term, it can influence obesity, contribute to certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.

To get the right nutrients it is important to eat a variety of foods everyday from the five main food groups:

  • Fruit - for fibre, carbohdydrates, minerals and vitamins EAT LOTS
  • Vegetables and legumes - fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals EAT LOTS
  • Meat, eggs, nuts, legumes, fish and poultry - protein and fat, vitamins and minerals especially iron
  • Bread, cereals, rice , pasta and noodles - protein, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals
  • Milk, yoghurt and cheese - protein, carbohydrates and fats, vitamins and minerals, especially calcuim for strengthening teeth and bones

and don't forget to drink lots of water - five to eight glasses a day is recommended, more if you are participating in physical activity.
