Premier's Physical Activity Council

The Premier's Physical Activity Council was formed in June 2001 to address physical inactivity in Tasmania.

The formation of the council has been a positive response to meet the requirements of the Tasmania Together Goal 4 to 'develop an approach to health and well-being that focuses on preventing poor health and encouraging healthy lifestyles'.

Under the leadership of Doug Lowe, the council led the development of a state-wide physical activity plan to guide Tasmanians towards becoming more active. The Tasmanian Physical Activity Plan has been developed following extensive consultations held around the State with key government and non-government agencies as well as community representatives.

The Plan will be a crucial tool in achieving the vision of a more active and healthy Tasmania. It will also provide a framework to ensure all parts of government and the community can work together to achieve this vision.

It is recognised that the council faces a long term task in changing community attitudes towards physical activity, but it is encouraging to note the public support provided to projects such as Get Walking Tasmania, Get Moving at Work Resource Kit and Online Survey, State Bike Week, and the Medibank Private Active Tasmania Awards.

All of these initiatives demonstrate the benefits of physical activity to individuals, schools, workplaces and communities.

By taking the initiative to make physical activity an integral component of our lives, Tasmania as a whole will benefit through improved health, social interaction, a healthy environment and a strong community.
