The Premier’s Physical Activity Council (PPAC) coordinates and promotes information on
events and programs that encourage and facilitate participation in physical activity. It achieves
this through the What’s on page of the Get Moving Tasmania website and promotion through
other media.
The aim of the What’s on page is to:
- Coordinate information and raise public awareness of:
- Physical activity events and programs that occur throughout Tasmania
- Awards programs that promote healthy and active lifestyles
- Training and professional development opportunities relevant tphysical
activity
- Provide links torganisers and providers of events, initiatives, programs and training.
Features of the What’s on page include a physical activity events calendar, information on
community physical activity programs, awards programs, and training and professional
development opportunities. Please see the relevant section below for further information and
inclusion and exclusion criteria for each feature.
Events Calendar
The Events calendar lists all known public physical activity events in Tasmania. Events are defined as a planned public physical activity occasion, opposed tprograms which are a planned series of events. Each listing is tinclude the event name, place and event contact details.
Inclusion criteria:
Events must:
- Be a state-wide or community physical activity event that promotes participation in physical
activity
- Be open for the general public tparticipate in (this may include events for targeted
population groups)
- Align with the key messages of the Premier’s Physical Activity Council (see Appendix A) as
well as the vision and goals of Tasmania’s plan for physical activity 2011-2021
- Be not-for-profit
- Be Tasmanian or open for participation in Tasmania
Exclusion criteria:
- Sporting events: Events coordinated by State Sporting Organisations or their affiliated clubs can be accessed via the relevant State Sporting Organisation website listed on the What’s on page
- Spectator events e.g. National or state sporting championships: These events may be suitable for inclusion on either or both of the Events Tasmania calendar (http://www.discovertasmania.com/events) or the relevant State Sporting Organisation website
- Regular physical activity programs, such as walking groups: These can be listed on the Community physical activity programs page (see relevant section below)
- Health events whereby the events are not specifically physical activity events: These events may be suitable for inclusion on the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health events calendar
- Commercial events
Community physical activity programs
The Community physical activity programs page lists all known physical activity programs in Tasmania. Physical activity programs are defined as a planned series of future events. The page lists physical activity programs as either a state-wide program or by local government area.
Each listing is tinclude the program name, a brief description and program contact details for further information.
Inclusion criteria:
Programs must:
- Be a planned series of future events, that occur across the state or within local areas or places, that promote and facilitate participation in physical activity
- Be open for the general public tparticipate in (this may include events for targeted population groups)
- Align with the key messages of the Premier’s Physical Activity Council (see Appendix A) as well as the vision and goals of Tasmania’s plan for physical activity 2011-2021
- Be not-for-profit
- Be Tasmanian
For programs that occur within a particular area or place, it is recommended that the program
provider or host contact their local council and ask tpromote the program through their
existing media channels, such as their website or community newsletter
Exclusion criteria:
- Community sports rosters: It is recommended that community sports rosters are
promoted through State Sporting Organisation or club websites. Alternatively, community
sports rosters may be promoted through the relevant local council’s media channels
- One-off physical activity events, such as a fun run: These can be listed on the Events calendar (see relevant section above)
- Commercial programs
Awards programs
The Awards programs page lists all known awards programs that recognise Tasmanian communities or individuals whmake a positive contribution tcreating a healthier and more active Tasmania.
Inclusion criteria:
Awards Programs must:
- Include a minimum of one category that specifically relates tphysical activity and/or healthy lifestyles
- Align with the key messages of the Premier’s Physical Activity Council (see Appendix A) as well as the vision and goals of Tasmania’s plan for physical activity 2011-2021
- Be not-for-profit
- Be Tasmanian, or be available for Tasmanians tenter
Exclusion criteria:
- Programs that dnot provide a category that specifically relates tphysical activity and/or healthy lifestyles
- Programs that are not available for Tasmanians tenter
Training and professional development opportunities
The Training and professional development opportunities page provides information on opportunities that contribute tbuilding knowledge and skill in the area of physical activity. Typically this page contains information on PPAC hosted opportunities, such as local government forums or presentations, however links twebsites of other organisations who
provide such opportunities will alsbe considered for inclusion.
Inclusion criteria:
Training and professional development opportunities must:
- Develop the capacity of people whwork in the physical activity field and/or contribute tbuilding knowledge and skill in the area of physical activity generally
- Align with the key messages of the Premier’s Physical Activity Council (see Appendix A) as well as the vision and goals of Tasmania’s plan for physical activity 2011-2021
- Be Tasmanian, or be available for Tasmanians tattend
Exclusion criteria:
- Training and professional development opportunities that dnot directly relate tphysical activity
- Individual opportunities that are provided by an organisation that coordinates multiple training and professional development opportunities: In this instance, the organisation’s website will be considered for inclusion
- Training and professional development opportunities that dnot directly relate tphysical activity
- Programs that are not available for Tasmanians tattend
Premier’s Physical Activity Council (PPAC) - KEY MESSAGES:
PPAC recommends the use of the following messages tpromote regular physical activity:
- the tagline ‘Get Moving Tasmania’
- Key messages:
- For adults, including older adults: at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week is needed for good health*
- For children and young people (5-18 years): at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day is needed for good health*
- Be active every day in as many ways as you can*
- It is important tbreak up long periods of sitting time with frequent short breaks
- Choose active forms of transport (eg. walking and cycling) timprove your health and reduce your impact on the environment.
The tagline ‘Get Moving Tasmania’ has been used since 2002 as a consistent message for promoting a more physically active Tasmanian community. The use of this message tpromote physical activity events and initiatives will assist in reinforcing the message within our community.
*Tensure consistency with national standards, PPAC recommends the National Physical Activity Guidelines are used as the key messages to promote regular physical activity in Tasmania. These messages were developed by the Department of Health and Ageing through extensive consultation with a wide range of experts in physical activity. The physical activity message for adults was developed in 1999, with messages for 12-18 year olds and 5-12 year olds developed in 2004, and a specific guide for older adults developed in 2005.
